Liam Kelly will leave Motherwell at the end of his contract - clearing the route for a potential move to Rangers.

The Ibrox club have been linked with a free transfer swoop for the goalkeeper who progressed through the ranks at Rangers as a youngster.

Kelly - recently named in the Scotland squad - spent 12 years at Ibrox but failed to make an appearance for the first team.

The goalkeeper then signed for Livingston before moving to QPR and then Motherwell where he captained the Steelmen.

Motherwell this afternoon confirmed Kelly would depart the club after three-and-a-half years at the club.

It leaves Kelly as a free agent clearing the route for a possible move to Ibrox in the summer to join Philippe Clement's side.

Reports earlier this week suggested Kelly was on the cusp of joining Rangers. The goalkeeper would likely become a back-up option at Rangers behind Jack Butland with Jon McLaughlin set to leave in the summer.

Stuart Kettlewell said of Kelly's departure: “Liam Kelly will also be departing this summer, after a tremendous three-and-a-half years at Motherwell.

"He has been an excellent player to work with, who on top of performing on the pitch, has been a leader behind the scenes."

A Motherwell statement that listed Kelly among five departing first team players added: "The club wishes to thank each player who is leaving for their service and wishes them the very best in their careers."
