Jack Butland has been overlooked for an England call-up again after Sam Johnstone dropped out of the squad.

The Rangers keeper had been widely tipped to be included in Gareth Southgate's squad this month for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

However, he was initially left out with Johnstone, Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale selected.

The door re-opened for a possible return to the international fold on Sunday as Johnstone pulled out - alongside Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker - through injury.

But, instead of turning to Butland, Southgate moved to select Burnley keeper James Trafford - who has featured at under-21 level for England.

Southgate has previous for selecting England youngsters as replacements instead of possible call-ups for other experienced pros.

He added Kobbie Mainoo to his squad this month, had utilised Alfie Devine in September.

It's thought Trafford's call-up comes to assist Ramsdale and Pickford rather than as a third-choice option in goal - and is not down to his club form.

Last week, former Manchester United and England defender Wes Brown urged Butland not to give up on a return for England. He said: “It’s a tough position to judge because the keepers coming into the squad don’t necessarily play a lot. It’s pretty much Pickford starting most games. Maybe in the odd friendly here or there someone else gets in.

“But in general the back-ups don’t get a chance to play competitive matches for England, which is unfortunate. But all Jack can do is keep playing well.

“It’s hard. Injuries are an obvious opportunity for him. If one of the guys in front of him picks up a knock. But it’s hard to say what his chances are.

“This is the last international break before the squad for the summer is picked. It will be difficult. But Gareth has brought Kobbie Mainoo in from nowhere. Can he do the same for Jack? I’m not sure. He just has to keep his head up and play well until the end of the season.”
