Wright at the double
The former Aberdeen winger was handed a rare start by Giovanni van Bronckhorst for this one. He certainly showed the manager what he’s capable of. The 24-year-old bagged a brace at Fir Park as he helped Rangers to the 3-1 victory. His first was a scrappy one – not that he’ll care, but at least he was gambling to be in the mix and showed great commitment to score. His second, right after half-time, was a superb drilled finish into the bottom corner. Wright displayed an assured confidence throughout. This will have pleased everyone connected to Rangers, as he showed that he’s a worthy starting option for the season run-in.
Stupidity from Balogun
Need we say much more… his rashness completely changed the game in the first-half and allowed Motherwell back into the match – which was more than comfortable at the time for Rangers. The Nigerian could have absolutely no complaints whatsoever, it was as clear a red card as you’re ever likely to see. Yes, his studs touch the ball. But he went completely over the top of the ball as part of his challenge and caught the ‘Well player high on his shin. It was a potential leg-breaker and there was no need to make the tackle in the manner he did.
Ringing the changes
With several important games coming up over the next two weeks, it was hardly a surprise to see van Bronckhorst make several changes during the match. There were run-outs for the likes of James Sands, Leon King and Cedric Itten once the points had been wrapped up. Man United loanee Amad Diallo also started the match and looked lively, but was hooked off due to the red card. Steven Davis and Glen Kamara came into the midfield too, while the likes of Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and Ryan Kent were all rested. It’s RB Leipzig up next, with Celtic next Sunday and then Leipzig again in the following mid-week.
