Barry Ferguson is in no doubt that Philippe Clement wants to implement huge changes at Rangers. 

The Light Blues are set to finish runners up to Celtic for the third season in a row, however their title fate was in their own hands just a month ago. 

Rangers blew that chance following dropped points against Dundee plus defeats to Ross County and Celtic. 

Now they've had to witness their city rivals maintain their bragging rights. 

And former Rangers captain, Ferguson, believes Clement needs to recruit more experienced heads over the summer transfer window if they have ambitions of knocking Celtic off their perch next year.

"It's clear that he (Clement) wants to do some major surgery to the squad," Ferguson told the Go Radio Football Show. 

"I look at the team last night, and there was a few young players; (Ross) McCausland, (Fabio) Silva and Ridvan (Yilmaz) are under 23. It was great to see Robbie Fraser come on at left-back and Cole McKinnon came on at right-back. 

"But I think at this moment in time, Rangers need experience. Experienced campaigners, guys who can go on and play 40 or 50 games a season and handle the pressure, and the standards that are needed at Rangers."

Jack Butland, 31, has arguably been Rangers player of the season, yet he was signed as a free agent from Crystal Palace last summer. 

Injuries aside, Abdallah Sima has also been a success up front since joining on-loan from Brighton.

And Ferguson reckons the Light Blues may have to go down a similar route during Clement's first close-season as Rangers boss.

He said: "Look at Sima. They might need to go down the loan market again. I think Sima came in and he was a slow burner to start with, but he's became such an important player. 

"He's obviously been injured and he's been a big miss the last few weeks. 

"It's clear he (Clement) is going to make changes. I heard him in his press conference on Monday, it's clear he's not happy with what's going on. 

"You've got to understand the last few years, managers have come in halfway through the season. They come in with different methods and training ideas, so it will be interesting to see what happens come the summer. 

"But theres no denying that the manager is desperate to make quite a number of changes."
