Rangers have clinched the Scottish League Cup a record 28 times in their history and are the current holders after defeating Aberdeen 1-0 at Hampden Park on December 17, 2023.

Captain James Tavernier netted the decisive goal in the final, securing the trophy for his team a little over two months into Philippe Clement's tenure as manager at Ibrox.

Originally established as the Southern League Cup in 1940, during a time when the Scottish Cup was suspended due to wartime restrictions, this regional competition gradually evolved into what became known as the Scottish Football League Cup.

The Scottish League Cup, which began in the 1946/47 season, is the oldest national league cup still active today. Originally a simple knockout competition, the format was revamped in the 2016/17 season to introduce a league phase that includes 40 teams – 38 league clubs not involved in UEFA competitions and two non-league sides.

During this phase, teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. If a match is tied after 90 minutes, a penalty shoot-out determines the winner, who earns an extra bonus point. The top eight group winners and three best runners-up move on to the second round, where they are joined by the five UEFA participants.
