Philippe Clement insists the door is still open for Todd Cantwell should he wish to remain at Rangers this summer.

Clement revealed last week that Cantwell has asked to leave Ibrox just 18 months after making the move from Norwich City. The midfielder was again absent as Rangers rounded off their pre-season schedule with a draw against Union Berlin on Saturday and is not expected to feature in the Premiership opener with Hearts this weekend.

Cantwell scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 44 appearances for Rangers last term. But he informed Clement of his desire to quit Glasgow after a holding crunch talks over his future earlier this summer.

"I kept the door all the time open all these weeks," Clement told Sky Sports. "It is already a while ago that he came the first time with that. As long as a player is here and we believe in his qualities the door is always open. But, of course, we need to focus now on the guys who are totally with their minds in the club to get results in the next couple of weeks. We will see what happens."

Clement saw influential figures such as Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Ryan Jack leave Ibrox at the end of their contracts in May. Sam Lammers quit the club to join FC Twente on Friday evening, while Connor Goldson is set to join Aris Limassol.

The arrival of Vaclav Cerny last week was the latest piece of the jigsaw in place ahead of the new term. The Rangers Review revealed on Sunday that Joan Jordan will not be making the move from Sevilla but Clement is not concerned by the mood of a demanding support that expected more business to be done by this stage.

“If you can find one fan who is happy now about all the transfers done in a club, you will do a great job," Clement said. “It’s all over in all the teams, in all the squads that fans want more. And that’s why they are fans. That’s normal.

“It’s a busy period. It’s also a period that started later than normal because of the Euros. The club did already a lot of things inside the budget that we have. But we don’t have a budget that means we just spend money to spend money.

“So we need to do it wisely, and not also short term but long term. Like I said, a lot of the core of the team left and were above their 30s so we need to reinvest in younger players in the development for the future. So it's looking short term and long term."
