Jack Butland believes he can earn a recall to the England squad ahead of the European Championship this summer by continuing to star for Rangers at home and abroad.
The 30-year-old won the last of his nine caps for the Three Lions in a friendly with Switzerland five years ago and has since fallen down the pecking order at international level. But a series of stunning performances this season have potentially opened the door for Butland to make a bid for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.
Butland has been a huge figure between the sticks for Rangers as he has filled the jersey vacated by Ibrox legend Allan McGregor and firmly established himself as the best keeper in Scotland by some distance. He has been an ever-present in the Premiership this term and a shutout against St Mirren on Saturday was the 18th clean sheet in 36 appearances in all competitions.

Southgate picked Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone, the Crystal Palace shot-stopper, in his most recent group and Everton star Jordan Pickford is firmly established as the first choice at present. That won’t daunt Butland, however, as the man who became the youngest ever keeper to win a cap back in 2012 sets his sights on a remarkable international comeback.
“You can only do what you can do,” Butland said. “I have had my moments, seasons, before where I have been, in my opinion, the best in England.
"All I can do is do what I am doing. I haven’t been in that England squad for a while. If I said it was at the forefront of my mind, no. If it comes, absolutely I would love it.
“Ultimately I have to do the job for Rangers and the fact is that we are playing regularly at the minute, playing in some great competitions, we have got European football to come. So hopefully that is a good platform to continue to showcase that.

“I know they have got a lot of players and a lot of goalkeepers to look at. Knowing the England camp, they don’t leave any stone unturned and if it is something that they are thinking about then they would have done that already.
“Whether they have been here in person or watched games, if that was a consideration then they don’t just make those decisions willy-nilly. It would be based on whether they think it was the right thing. That is why the England team has been successful and hopefully it continues and hopefully it is a big summer for the team.
“I don’t think [playing in Scotland is an impediment]. You have seen England players in the past being selected from playing in European competition and in mainland Europe and things like that. It comes down to what you are capable of doing and whether you can perform and are performing at the right level. If that is the case, you are an option.”
